Translate PDF Documents with AI

Translate documents to any language with AI.

You receive a contract in German. A research paper in Japanese. A government form in Portuguese. You need to understand what it says — and generic machine translation loses formatting, context, and the nuances that matter in formal documents.

Copying text from a PDF, pasting into Google Translate, and reconstructing the document is painful. You lose the layout. Headers, footers, and tables become jumbled text. Multi-page documents require endless copy-paste cycles.

How to Translate a PDF Document

Upload Your PDF

Drop your document into the translate tool. It works with any text-based PDF. For scanned documents, run OCR first.

2

Select Target Language

Choose from 50+ languages. The AI auto-detects the source language, so you only need to specify what you want it translated into.

3

Download Translation

The AI translates the full document while preserving structure. Download the translated PDF ready to read or share.

Why AI Translation Beats Copy-Paste

Preserves Document Structure

Headers, paragraphs, lists, and sections maintain their formatting. You get a translated document, not a wall of translated text.

Context-Aware Translation

Claude AI understands context. Legal terms are translated as legal terms. Technical jargon is handled appropriately. "Bank" translates differently in a financial document vs. a geography paper.

50+ Languages

Translate between any combination of major world languages. English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Portuguese, and dozens more.

Document Privacy During Translation

Documents that need translation are frequently sensitive: international contracts, immigration paperwork, foreign legal filings, medical records from overseas providers, or corporate communications across language barriers.

Google Translate and DeepL process your text on their servers. If you're translating a confidential contract, the full text passes through their infrastructure. ModernPDF's translation uses Claude AI through a rate-limited API — the document text is sent for translation, but it's not stored, logged, or used for training.

For the most sensitive translations, note that the text content does leave your device to reach the AI translation API. However, file metadata, images, and formatting stay local. Only the extracted text is sent for translation, and Anthropic's data policies prevent retention or training use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the AI translation?

Claude AI produces high-quality translations suitable for understanding documents and internal use. For legally binding translations or certified documents, you should still use a professional human translator — but ModernPDF is excellent for getting the gist, reviewing foreign documents, or producing draft translations.

Can I translate scanned PDFs?

Not directly. Scanned PDFs contain images, not text. Run the document through OCR first to extract the text, then translate the resulting searchable PDF.

Is translation a free feature?

Translation is a Pro feature, available with a subscription at $9/month or $49/year. Pro also unlocks OCR, unlimited use of all tools, and 500MB file sizes.

Does the translation preserve formatting?

The AI preserves the document's section structure — headings, paragraphs, lists. However, exact visual formatting (fonts, spacing, layout positioning) may differ slightly since translated text is often longer or shorter than the original.

What languages are supported?

50+ languages including all major world languages. The AI auto-detects the source language. Popular pairs include English↔Spanish, English↔Chinese, English↔French, English↔German, English↔Japanese, and English↔Portuguese.
