Preview lets you annotate PDFs, but it cannot add new text, insert images at arbitrary positions, or modify existing content. ModernPDF gives you a proper PDF editor in your browser — no installation, no subscription, no file upload.
Navigate to the Edit PDF tool. Works in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox on any Mac.
Drag the file from Finder into the editor. The document loads with full page previews.
Add text, insert images, draw shapes, or add annotations. Download the edited PDF when done.
The editor renders each PDF page as a high-resolution canvas, showing the document exactly as it will appear.
New content (text, images, shapes) is added as overlay layers on top of the existing PDF content.
The edited file is assembled in your browser and downloaded. The original PDF is never modified.
On Mac, the PDF editing landscape is frustrating. Preview handles basic annotations — highlights, sticky notes, signatures — but cannot add arbitrary text or images. Adobe Acrobat Pro costs $22.99/month. PDF Expert is a one-time purchase but still requires installation.
For users who need to add a text field to a PDF, insert a logo, or annotate a document with shapes and arrows, ModernPDF provides a browser-based editor that covers the most common editing operations. It will not replace Acrobat for heavy document reconstruction, but for the edits 90% of users actually need — adding text, inserting images, highlighting, and annotating — it works immediately with no installation.
If you need to add text, images, or notes to a PDF and do not want to pay $22.99/month for Acrobat.
Preview handles highlights and sticky notes but cannot place text boxes, insert images, or draw at specific positions.
Need to mark up a document before a meeting? Add arrows, circles, and text callouts without installing anything.
Managed Macs that do not allow software installation. Browser-based editing works immediately.
ModernPDF's editor adds new content on top of existing PDF pages. Here is what you can do:
Add text: Place text boxes anywhere on the page. Choose font, size, color, and alignment. Useful for adding notes, filling in blank areas, or placing labels.
Insert images: Upload a logo, stamp, or photo and position it on any page. Resize and move freely.
Draw shapes: Add rectangles, circles, lines, and arrows. Useful for highlighting sections, drawing attention to specific areas, or creating simple diagrams.
Highlight & underline: Select text and apply highlights in any color. Add underlines and strikethroughs.
Add signatures: Use the Fill & Sign tool to draw, type, or upload your signature and place it anywhere.
What you cannot do (yet): Modify existing text in the PDF. To change existing text, convert the PDF to Word, make your edits, then convert back. This is a limitation of the overlay editing approach, which preserves the original document structure while adding new content on top.
